Day 19: Favourite Soundtrack - Anything created by Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Enchanted, Tangled.)
It’s too hard to decide on a favourite sound track, so I decided to go with the guy who has created most of my favourite ones, Mr. Alan Menken. (But gun to my head Beauty and the Beast is my favourite.)
Well, this couldn’t be more accurate.

I remember Alan Menken was once asked what Disney film he thought had Howard Ashman’s mark after he died, because of course when Howard passed away in 1991, they didn’t collaborate anymore. And Alan said “Hercules”. And the music/lyrics in that movie are so Howard. The fact that the Muses are singing black gospel style is very much in Howard’s own brand. He would have loved that. It’s actually amazing that the Muses sing gospel and Howard wasn’t even responsible. And I feel like Go the Distance has his influence too. He wrote a song called Proud of Your Boy for “Aladdin” which was cut by Jeffrey Katzenberg, and I begrudgingly admit that was a good decision. But the song is about Aladdin wanting to make his mother proud, and how Howard drew that from his own experiences. Go the Distance has that similar mark because Howard was sort of searching and found Disney and was able to ~soar.
All of this. Yes.
The Muses in Hercules are just like the three Chorus Girls in Little Shop of Horrors.
